Vanessa Hudson's daunting task at Qantas following Joyce's emergency exit
After 15 years, Qantas finally has a new CEO. But is Vanessa Hudson getting a poisoned chalice?
Alan Joyce's retirement two months early from Qantas thrusts Vanessa Hudson into one of the biggest jobs in corporate Australia. But it won't be the moment of celebration she may have hoped.
Joyce's departure is unlikely to see him completely fade out of the public spotlight (there is still growing anger over his multi-million dollar bonuses). But as Hudson takes the reins she now faces the unenviable task of cleaning up his messes.
In a prepared statement, Qantas said the hurried departure would help prioritise company “renewal” during a “challenging time”.
Analyst Gaurav Sodhi told Capital Brief that while the new CEO deserves a chance, she has been “set up to fail”.
