‘I have been frustrated with the LNP’: Canavan reacts to poor poll
New Nationals leader Matt Canavan has hit the ground running to promote his party’s change of approach. But polling from Capital Brief/Demos AU is a sobering assessment of the task ahead.
Nationals leader Matt Canavan says he understands voter frustrations with the Liberal National Party but questioned the lack of unity and teamwork in his major rival, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation.
Canavan’s attack followed Friday’s Capital Brief/Demos AU poll, which shows One Nation well ahead of the Coalition and in a position to win all Nationals seats in the House of Representatives.
The research revealed that if current polling figures were born out in an election, Hanson’s One Nation would win between 46 and 55 seats nationally, with Labor still on course for a majority government with a total of between 77 and 86 and the Coalition predicted to win between nine and 17 seats.
Canavan, who replaced David Littleproud as Nationals leader earlier this month and was campaigning in South Australia on Friday, told Capital Brief: “I understand why people have been frustrated with the LNP.”
