With the two-year reduction in migration how would you go about fixing the housing supply issues in the meantime. Is there a bigger project within that two-year period?
Just to be clear: what we were suggesting about the net overseas migration is that there’d be a sharp cut in year one, and then three years [before getting] back to back up. Still at a lower level than was anticipated by Labor's policies, but obviously moderating over time as you [bring it] back.
The first thing is, you're allowing the current supply to continue to refill the gap. It's not so different from what we actually saw in Sydney, when I became cities minister. We had this position where we got way behind. Depending on whose numbers you used [it was] 40,000 houses, or something like that. We realised that we needed to try to get some catch up. So this is a very, very similar situation, where it's just got behind. So the challenge is in the short term. Trying to get more houses built quickly is hard.
