In his own words: Anthony Albanese interview transcript

The transcript of this interview between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and chief political correspondent Anthony Galloway has been edited for length, clarity and readability.

Why did you want to conceptualise all of your industry policies in one Act?

One of the vision statements that I did from opposition was about a future made in Australia. And during the election campaign we had five main themes - one of which was a future made in Australia. So this… isn’t something that’s new, just thought up. But it was [about] how to make sure that there's a frame so the individual measures that we are taking are seen in that frame, in that strategic frame. Because it's really about what future growth looks like, what the opportunities are for taking advantage of the shift in the global economy, to position Australia so that we’re stronger by the end of this decade.

And I really think that we can't just stand still - we either move forward in this context, or we'll go backwards, like the world will just keep going past us. I think the frame of having an act that brings measures together, so you'll see some more stuff in the budget on Tuesday. But already we have the creation of the National Reconstruction Fund, the Net Zero Economy Authority, the individual funds as well that we've done - Solar Sunshot, the Hydrogen Headstart program - those sort of programs are about how do we not replace private capital and investment, but how does government fulfil a role in facilitating private sector activity. So it's not crowding out private capital, it’s government can have a role in creating a framework where that's encouraged.
