Is data centre investment the next mining boom? Maybe.

The mining boom reshaped Australia’s economy. Some economists say data centre investment could be the next generational opportunity.

Data centre investment and the rapid growth in spending is increasingly being compared to the mining boom of the late 2000s.

But with much of the money currently flowing overseas, and a slew of development barriers, whether it will result in the same economic uplift is being hotly debated.

“We’re laying down the key initial and critical infrastructure for the new economy,” Judo Bank chief economic adviser Warren Hogan told Capital Brief.

“The change in our economy we’re going to see over the next decade is probably one of the greatest changes you’ll ever see within a generation ever.”
