Is Labor heartland Canberra the next frontier for the independent movement?
The ACT has long been a Labor stronghold. But the independent movement, which has decimated once-safe Liberal seats, views the capital as its next frontier.
On the afternoon voters delivered the Albanese government a thumping swing at the 2025 election, Capital Brief received a panicked call telling a very different story.
“I think we might be losing Bean,” a shocked ACT Labor source said.
Bean, covering southern Canberra, has never been out of Labor hands. In fact, no other party has held any of the ACT’s lower house seats since 1996.
But as Australians queued up to vote across the country, the Labor source reported Canberrans appeared to be bucking the national trend.
