Juniors get the biggest pay rises (but expect more) as accountants' wage growth slows to a trickle

Accountants scraped in a pay rise last year, with the biggest increases going to relatively junior professionals. And women’s pay is still falling behind.

Young accountants are snapping up bigger pay rises than their older counterparts — but they still don’t think it’s enough.

New data from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, which surveyed around 2800 Australian members about their remuneration, shows about 60% of all surveyed accountants got a pay rise last year.

The median pay of a chartered accountant in Australia jumped to $155,000 in 2023, up 3% over the year. That’s after salaries increased 11% in 2022.

But those with the least experience secured the largest pay increases in percentage terms, with 45% of those with five or less years on the job achieving a boost of 7.6% or more. This was the biggest increase of any group, with less than a third of all accountants getting a pay rise of this magnitude.
