Labor defends ‘fundamental’ US alliance as new polling shows Australians’ growing unease with Trump
Senior ministers have staunchly defended the US alliance as exclusive new CapitalBrief/DemosAU polling shows Australians are increasingly sceptical of it.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke insists Washington remains “fundamental” to Australia’s national security regardless of the president of the day, after new polling showed Australians are increasingly sceptical of the US alliance.
Burke, a practising Catholic, also pushed back against US President Donald Trump over his attacks on Pope Leo XIV, saying he “never supports making fun of anyone’s religion”.
An exclusive CapitalBrief/DemosAU poll published on Wednesday showed support for Trump was collapsing among Australians, with the vast majority wanting their government to distance itself from the US president.
But perhaps more significantly, it also showed many Australians were questioning the US relationship itself, with a major plurality believing Washington was not a reliable military ally.
