Labor faces new push to pay super during parental leave ahead of budget

Will super soon be paid on parental leave? Industry is getting more confident.

Industry is hopeful Minister for Women Katy Gallagher is ready to act on Sam Mostyn's report sooner than later. AAP Image/Mick Tsikas.

Women, who on average end up with much less superannuation then men, could be more than $10,000 better off when they retire if a new push to pay super on paid parental leave is successful.

The federal government isn't ruling out the change for the upcoming May budget, while the superannuation industry and professional associations are backing it as a non-inflationary measure that will help women.

Commonwealth-supported Parental Leave Pay, which is an income-capped minimum wage payment for a specified period (soon to be 26 weeks) does not currently include superannuation, despite the suggestion of several reviews into the system and gender equality.

Minister for Women and Finance Katy Gallagher would not be drawn on the issue at estimates this week, saying only that it “remains before the government”. No further information was forthcoming after additional questions were sent by Capital Brief.
