Labor lists media reforms on cabinet agenda amid chaotic final sitting week
Ministers were set to discuss measures this week, including the government's response to Meta and the future of the news media bargaining code, sources said.
Labor is finalising a package of media reforms which tackles Meta’s decision to end commercial deals with publishers and establishes a new regime to guide journalism-related policy.
The government’s media reforms were listed for discussion at Monday morning’s federal cabinet meeting, according to sources briefed on the plans.
Ministers were expected to review several measures, including a response to Meta and the future of the news media bargaining code. The response could include a new levy on tech giants which would redistribute revenue to Australian publishers.
Cabinet was also expected to examine plans for an ex ante regulatory framework and an update on the News MAP program — a policy framework to support public interest journalism in Australia, according to the sources.
