Labor prepares to unveil plans for competition policy targeting big tech
Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones is set to reveal plans for an ex-ante regime in Sydney on Monday, targeting anti-competitive behaviour by tech giants, sources say.
Labor is poised to unveil its plans for a long-anticipated ex-ante regime next week — a policy framework designed to curb anti-competitive behaviour by the world’s largest tech companies operating in Australia.
Senior industry and government sources, speaking to Capital Brief on condition of anonymity due to the confidential nature of the discussions, said Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones is expected to announce the government’s next steps on the ex-ante regime during a speech at a McKell Institute event in Sydney on Monday evening.
The event, which will be held at the University of Sydney, is titled “50 years of consumer protections: Revitalising consumer law to strengthen markets and deliver fairness in the digital age."
A spokesperson for Jones did not confirm or deny the contents of the minister’s speech. In a statement, the spokesperson said the government would have more to say in due course.
