Labor settles on Islamophobia envoy after drawn-out process
Labor will appoint British-born Muslim scholar Aftab Malik as Australia’s first envoy to combat rising Islamophobia.
Labor has settled on British scholar Aftab Malik as Australia’s first envoy to combat Islamophobia, bringing an end to a long-running and scattergun search.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced more than two months ago that an Islamophobia envoy would soon be named, following the unveiling of his envoy to counter antisemitism.
Albanese had initially intended to announce both envoys simultaneously, but, as Capital Brief has reported, the search for an Islamophobia envoy was repeatedly delayed after several approaches collapsed.
Two sources have told Capital Brief that Malik, an expert on Muslim affairs for the United Nations’ Alliance of Civilisations, has accepted the role and the government is planning to announce the appointment in the coming days.
