Labor tries to shift gear as the Voice shows signs of breaking
The Albanese government is finding it difficult to switch the conversation away from the faltering Voice campaign.
When Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas announced a “grant agreement” to develop a Hydrogen hub near Whyalla on Monday morning, people would have been forgiven for thinking there had been a major development.
“Together, both governments are investing $100 million to develop infrastructure at Port Bonython and prepare it to become South Australia's first large-scale export terminal for hydrogen,” the press release stated.
But this is not new money. The former Coalition government announced $70 million to develop the Port Bonython Hydrogen Hub in April, 2022, which was shortly followed by the state government’s commitment of $30 million.
There was no update to the SA government's proposed hydrogen plant; it hasn’t yet chosen the successful bidder for the project and the Commonwealth’s $2 billion Hydrogen Headstart program isn’t ready to receive expressions of interest.
