Latitude cyber lawsuit borrows from class-action playbook

The latest lawsuit against financial services company Latitude over its March 2023 cyberattack is an individual claim with class-action traits.

All class actions start the same way. There's knowledge in the public domain and company messaging over how the event at the heart of the lawsuit occurred, and what's been done to make sure it never happens again.

That's all claimants have to work on. Unless they seek early document access in a lawsuit, they've got nothing else.

So it is for Shahriar Saffari, the first individual to take legal action against Latitude Financial over its March 2023 cyberattack that saw the data of more than 7 million customers exposed.

But Saffari isn't the leading name on a group claim, he's a self-representing individual trying to get $1 million from Latitude for allegations the company failed to protect his personal information.
