Australia's biggest media companies have informally discussed the possibility of forming an alliance to collectively bargain with global artificial intelligence firms including OpenAI and Google for compensation for the use of their content.

Kerry Stokes'-controlled Seven West Media, television and publishing giant Nine Entertainment Co, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp and public broadcasters ABC and SBS had all been involved in the discussions, multiple sources familiar with the situation told Capital Brief.

The conversations, which are still in their early stages, have explored the possibility of companies joining forces to lodge an application to Australia’s competition watchdog that could allow the firms to collectively bargain with global AI firms.

None of the companies have committed to moving forward with the idea, the people said, and its possible that no formal alliance is ever formed.
