Meet the Australian startups trying to seize on a generational boom in semiconductors
Australia could play a key role in the global production of the world’s most vital tech, industry voices say.
In a covert corner of Sydney’s South Eveleigh precinct, next door to the city’s historic railway workshops, works the team trying to coordinate and accelerate Australia’s fledgling semiconductor industry.
The office of Semiconductor Sector Service Bureau (S3B) is on a mission to support Australian companies to build the technology, which is as central to this Information Age as trains were to the preceding industrial era.
“Semiconductors underpin everything. They’re in your phone, your washing machine and your light bulbs. It’s set to be a $1 trillion industry by 2030 and Australia has a role to play in it,” S3B inaugural director Nadia Court told Capital Brief.
Set up last year with support from the NSW Chief Scientist, S3B is a first of its kind initiative to kickstart the fledgling local industry, coordinating the divergent arms of business, government and research.
