Misinformation bill likely doomed as crossbench rallies against it

Labor’s plan to tackle misinformation on social media is on the brink of collapse, with Senate crossbenchers set to shoot it down.

The Albanese government is scrambling to pass a flurry of legislation before Parliament rises for the year, including its controversial misinformation and disinformation bill.

The bill passed the Lower House this week but faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where the Coalition and a number of progressive independents are voicing their opposition.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland was forced back to the drawing board a year ago, when her initial plan was widely panned for giving the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) too much power to regulate speech on the internet.
