Brian Kersmanc is a portfolio manager at GQG Partners. The ASX-listed, Florida-based firm has USD104 billion ($161 billion) worth of assets under management.

What was the first investment you ever made personally and how did it work out?

I picked some stocks as a kid and set up paper portfolios through college, but I’d say the first real due diligence I completed was actually on the University of Connecticut – specifically as a student athlete being recruited there. Looking back, I realise it's the same process I apply to stocks today.

At the time, their team was making the transition to becoming a division one college football program.
