Negative gearing brawl begins as Albanese declines to rule out tweaks

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers are considering changes to negative gearing but the process is in its early stages, sources told Capital Brief.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has declined to rule out reforms to negative gearing policy, sparking an immediate response from the federal Coalition and setting the stage for a major political fight over property tax concessions.

At a press conference in Tasmania on Tuesday, Albanese was asked to respond to fresh reports that the government had sought advice from Treasury over changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax discounts on property investments.

"I’ve seen those reports. What we do is we value the public service," Albanese said.

“From time to time, I’m sure the public service are looking at policy ideas - that’s because we value them. But we have our housing policy, it’s out there for all to see. It’s currently being blocked… by the ‘No-alition’ of the Liberals, the Nationals and the Greens in the Senate.”
