News Corp discredits AI payment talks between ACTU, Tech Council
The media conglomerate has raised doubts over the talks, insisting that Australian copyright laws already require AI firms to pay for using material and should not be changed.
News Corp has moved to discredit a “breakthrough” between the Australian Council of Trade Unions and Tech Council of Australia on the hotly contested issue of AI firms paying creators for the use of their content.
The Murdoch family-controlled media giant expressed scepticism on the talks between the two organisations, which took place in Canberra as part of the Albanese government’s economic roundtable, by highlighting that Australian copyright laws already require such payments.
“The Copyright Act is the law that ensures Australia’s copyright sector and workers are compensated for the use of their work. It is a strong framework that requires no change,” a News Corp Australia spokesperson told Capital Brief.
The issue of copyright law reform and compelling AI firms to pay media companies and creators for the use of their content in training their models were among the most anticipated watch items for media and tech executives heading into this week.
