News Corp draws union scrutiny over PwC led restructuring plan
Leadership at News Corp Australia is currently discussing a sweeping restructure in response to a tough ad market and Meta's retreat from news deals.
The media union has sought assurances from News Corp Australia that newsroom jobs will not be axed as the company weighs a sweeping restructure in response to a tough advertising market and Meta’s decision to walk away from deals with news publishers.
Leadership at News Corp Australia is currently weighing a restructure of the company, led by executive chairman Michael Miller, that would reorganise the company into three divisions — one focused on its pure digital assets including website news.com.au; another focused on its metro tabloids and sport and a third housing its prestige titles including The Australian broadsheet and magazines. Consulting firm PwC has been brought in to assist with the restructuring.
The company has yet to make any final decisions on the restructure, according to people familiar with the plans not authorised to speak publicly. The restructure discussions and involvement of PwC were first reported by the Australian Financial Review. News Corp declined to comment.
The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, a union representing journalists in Australia, made contact with management at News Corp Australia over the plans on Monday, a union spokesperson told Capital Brief. Under the company’s enterprise agreement, staff would need to be consulted on major changes to the workplace, the spokesperson said.
