Nine publishing shake-up complete as ex-AFR boss Stutchbury heads to think tank
Michael Stutchbury stood down as editor of the Australian Financial Review to the surprise of many colleagues last year. He told Capital Brief he’s excited to lead an influential think tank.
Michael Stutchbury does not sound like he has any interest in slowing down. Almost one year after he stepped aside from one of the biggest jobs in Australian media — to the surprise of many of his colleagues — the man known as 'Stutch' is moving into a new role as the next executive director of the Centre for Independent Studies, a conservative think tank.
An energised Stutchbury, formerly the longest serving editor of the Financial Review, told Capital Brief he was excited by the opportunity, which came after he was invited to apply for the role by former Macquarie Group chief executive Nicholas Moore, who chairs the CIS.
He said the experience of running a newsroom that, at its peak, was more than 200 people, would hold him in good stead in his new role.
“And so it’s taking that, which very much is at the forefront of news, and putting it into a think tank environment which goes deeper. It’s going to be based on high quality research, but it’s good facts and figures that back it all up. So I’m very keen and excited by the opportunity of having some high quality research to push ahead on a similar sort of agenda.”
