One teal loses her seat, others are strengthened in Sydney's electoral shake-up
Kylea Tink may now square off with prominent Liberal frontbencher Paul Fletcher in the next election after her North Sydney seat was abolished.
The upcoming federal election is being viewed by some political pundits as an opportunity for the ‘teal’ independents to prove they have staying power. Kylea Tink may no longer get that chance.
Tink was one of three teal independents to snatch Liberal-held seats in Sydney at the 2022 election, wrestling North Sydney off Trent Zimmerman with a 12.2% swing.
But after the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) announced changes to Sydney’s electoral map on Friday, her path to reelection is much more uncertain.
One seat in NSW was always set to be abolished. On Friday, the AEC confirmed that it will be North Sydney – which has existed since federation – in a decision that may prompt a showdown between Tink and Liberal frontbencher Paul Fletcher.
