OpenAI becomes Tech Council member as it expands in Australia
The USD500 billion startup has previously advocated for more data centres and a national upskilling program.
OpenAI has joined the Tech Council of Australia (TCA), becoming a member of the industry body amid chair Scott Farquhar’s push for Australia to position itself as a data centre hub for Southeast Asia.
The USD500 billion ($750 billion) startup has been expanding locally. In August it announced a Sydney outpost, and last month its executives met Treasurer Jim Chalmers to discuss potential “strategic investments”.
“The TCA’s mission is to help shape Australia’s digital future by driving growth, investment and innovation in the tech sector. We welcome OpenAI to our membership and look forward to working with them on this,” a Tech Council spokesperson said.
The TCA’s original chief executive, Kate Pounder, stepped down in January last year. Midway through this year, she was hired by OpenAI as its Australian policy liaison.
