OpenAI executive says it will invest in Australia with or without copyright reform
Global policy affairs chief Chris Lehane, who is visiting Australia for SXSW Sydney, downplayed fears that tough copyright laws will deter investment.
OpenAI’s vice president of global affairs, Chris Lehane, has committed to working with the Australian government on efforts to drive investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure — regardless of whether it relaxes copyright laws.
The comments were made during a keynote address at SXSW Sydney on Friday, amid an intensifying global debate over the role of copyright laws in protecting creators seeking compensation for the use of their work to train AI models.
Lehane was asked whether Australia risked forfeiting data centre investment if it did not relax copyright laws to include fair use — a position advocated by the Tech Council of Australia.
“No, as I said, we are going to be in Australia, one way or the other,” Lehane told the conference.
