Palo Alto Networks CIO warns AI arms race is driving a malware explosion

The likes of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI are rushing to build AI models as quickly as possible. And Meerah Rajavel says there are reasons to be worried about that.

The chief information officer of the world's largest cybersecurity company, Palo Alto Networks, has warned Big Tech companies are prioritising speed over safety in their rush to dominate generative artificial intelligence, putting business and individuals at risks in the process.

Meerah Rajavel, Palo Alto’s CIO, told Capital Brief during a visit to Sydney last week that the rise of generative AI is making it easier for bad actors to develop and deploy malware on a grand scale.

“It used to take close to nine days to craft malware,” she said. “Now you can do it in less than three hours. You don’t need to be a programmer, you don’t need to be a hacker who’s super experienced.”

"As long as you know the basics, you can go and say, 'hey, I want to hack into that company using this kind of a threat vector, give me a plan, give me the code."
