Pauline Hanson has overreached before, and she might be doing it again
One Nation has clearly tapped into deep concern about immigration, but the party’s broader policy agenda risks alienating the voters it needs most.
The majority of Australians agree with Pauline Hanson, at least in principle, when she says immigration to Australia should be substantially reduced.
That is a fact borne out by our latest Capital Brief/DemosAU poll, which found six in 10 Australians agree with the sentiment, consistent with other polling.
But Hanson’s problem is that there isn’t much else in the political agenda she outlined at the National Press Club that Australians agree with.
Only a quarter of the country believes Australia should become a monocultural society, while a similar proportion supports the idea that childcare workers should not need qualifications. Even fewer support axing SBS or turning the ABC into a subscription-based service.
