Closely watched US media conglomerate NBCUniversal pulled in more than $50 million in revenue from its Australian media partners and local subscribers last year, according to accounts filed with the corporate regulator.

In fresh documents filed with ASIC last week, the Comcast-owned media company which owns streaming platforms Peacock and Hayu and the UK cable TV business Sky, posted a profit of $21.2 million in Australia for the year to 31 December, more than double the $8.8 million reported a year earlier.

NBCUniversal generated revenue of $50.3 million for the year, the bulk of which came from subscription sales and licensing, with $5.7 million from advertising. The firm funnelled $12.1 million in dividends back to its US parent company and paid $3.7 million in tax.

The figures are small compared to other US media and entertainment companies operating in Australia — such as Netflix, which raked in more than $1 billion from Australians last year — but are reflective of the company’s limited direct-to-consumer business in the local market.
