Peter Dutton looks for Liberal stardust to kickstart flagging campaign
Peter Dutton is hoping an 11th hour policy to allow first home buyers to negatively gear their own homes will help kickstart his faltering bid to become prime minister.
Federal election campaigns take on a manic pace in the home stretch, all backslapping and handshakes with locals as the leaders zig-zag across the country.
So it was fitting that the turn-off to western Sydney’s Liverpool Catholic Club, where Opposition Leader Peter Dutton was preparing to launch his campaign, passed the Stardust Circus, conveniently placed in a neighbouring field.
Inside, Dutton was hoping a little stardust would help kickstart his faltering bid to secure the keys to the Lodge.
Liberal luminaries John Howard, Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison – who had jetted back from a recent trip to New York – were among the crowd milling about before the leader’s arrival on Sunday. Malcolm Turnbull, whose criticisms of Dutton have grown increasingly strident, was an unsurprising absentee.
