Pocock says Australia needs a population growth plan, calls for migration review
The independent senator has accused the major parties of "bumbling along" on the issue of migration.
Independent Senator David Pocock is calling for a sweeping review into migration to Australia, saying the major parties are “bumbling along” without a plan on population growth.
Speaking to Capital Brief, Pocock warned centre-left politicians are too reticent to discuss the complexities that come with migration, vacating the debate for politicians who “may not be good faith actors”.
Net migration to Australia ballooned to its highest single-year figure in 2023, driven by a faster-than-expected return of international students and backpackers after Covid-19.
“The major parties, rather than having a well-informed inquiry, they want to be able to just sling mud at each other over it. The Greens don't even want to talk about it,” Pocock said.
