Pocock, motorists lobby want 'transparency' in new federal-state road funding deal
Crossbench senator David Pocock and the peak motoring group are urging the government to mandate state car crash data sharing in a new road funding deal.
Federal Transport Minister Catherine King says states and territories have agreed to share secret road crash data with the Commonwealth for the first time amid confusion over an ambiguous new funding agreement for road and rail projects worth tens of billions of dollars.
Capital Brief revealed yesterday that King has signed a new road and rail funding deal with four states and territories which did not contain an explicit commitment to move to a 50/50 funding split for nationally significant projects.
The agreement also references a commitment to establish a National Road Safety Data Collection and Reporting Framework and National Road Safety Minimum Dataset. However, some stakeholders are still confused as to whether Commonwealth funding will be directly tied to the sharing of detailed crash data in line with its 2022 election commitment.
In a statement to Capital Brief, King said all states had agreed to share their road safety data by signing the agreement.
