Queensland weighs in on the ANZ-Suncorp merger appeal

The Sunshine State wants to have a say in ANZ's appeal of the ACCC's decision to knock back its Suncorp Bank takeover.

When ANZ began its efforts to appeal the competition regulator's decision to block its $4.9 billion bid for Suncorp Bank, all eyes were on the potential role Bendigo and Adelaide Bank might play in the process.

And understandably. After all, it's a question lawyers for ANZ and Suncorp raised when the matter first appeared before the Australian Competition Tribunal in August.

But what of Queensland, the state where the main public benefits of the merger were expected to accrue?

Today's brisk directions hearing before Federal Court of Australia Judge John Halley, who presided over the tribunal this morning, focused on the role the state could play.
