Roundtable Day 2: Permits and post-work drinks
Jim Chalmers and his guests broadly agreed on a suite of measures to boost housing supply, slash regulations and speed up approvals at day two of the Economic Reform Roundtable.
After two long days shut away in the cabinet room with Treasurer Jim Chalmers, most of the 23 participants of the Economic Reform Roundtable were chauffeured down Adelaide Avenue to the Lodge for drinks with the Prime Minister late on Wednesday.
It may this hour or so with Anthony Albanese, rather than in hours of briefings and discussions inside the secured room of Parliament House, that their fortunes are decided.
Because whatever consensus is reached this week cannot proceed without the Prime Minister’s blessing.
On day two of the roundtable — which focused on productivity — there was a lot of support for pausing the National Construction Code, a policy proposed by the Coalition at the election and revived by the Albanese government in the lead-up to this week.
