Scammers are making AI deepfakes of 'the Kouk' and other economists... for some reason

Stephen Koukoulas, Saul Eslake and Shane Oliver told Capital Brief scammers have been using their likenesses to spruik fake investment schemes on social media.

NAB has warned that reported investment scams starting on social media platforms and other websites is up 15% in the past six months. Shutterstock.

Independent economist Stephen Koukoulas is about to give online scammers a run for their money. Because rather than just reporting imposters who falsely claim on social media that he supports their investment schemes, he's about to invite them to the chat.

While he's clearly frustrated by the rise of scams using his images and likeness to try and con unwary fans of his commentary into handing over their cash, he's also a little curious.

Likening these posts to “Nigerian prince” emails, Koukoulas queries how the schemes actually work. And he's now tempted to take matters into his own hands and send them messages to tease out the process.

A post on Instagram, seen by Capital Brief last week and now removed from the platform, showed a video of Koukoulas he had not authorised that suggested he endorsed an investment scheme.
