Schwartz Media chief executive Ben Shepherd has stepped down after just 10 months as the Melbourne-based publisher’s top executive.

Shepherd will be succeeded by Erik Jensen, the editor-in-chief of the company’s media assets, which include the 7am podcast, The Saturday Paper and The Monthly, staff were told on Friday.

“Ben has decided, for his own reasons, to look elsewhere,” Schwartz Media proprietor and former chairman Morry Schwartz told Capital Brief. He said Jensen, who has been with the company for the last decade, will take on the role of chief executive on top of his current duties.

“It was a week where everyone gave each other time to gather their thoughts. I had a think and realised I didn’t have to look too far [for Shepherd’s replacement], because there is a person here who is extraordinarily smart and who is across the company.”
