'Slap in the face': Appen accused of slashing pay rates for contractors
Contractors accuse the company of lowering hourly rates.
Appen contractors across the world are accusing the artificial intelligence data services provider of slashing pay rates by up to 90%.
The result is that some contractors say they are now being paid just a few dollars an hour to help some of the world’s biggest and most profitable tech companies like Meta and Amazon as they engage in an AI arms race.
“I was making $24 an hour in September, and now it's down to a measly $3. It feels like a slap in the face,” one North African translator told Capital Brief on the condition of anonymity.
“I can only assume they think it's fine to pay people in our regions next to nothing.”
