The CEO of Australia’s peak small business lobby says US President Donald Trump’s tariff regime is another reason to strengthen support for local enterprise.

Donald Trump’s tariff announcements have bolstered calls across the Australian business community for wide-ranging tax reform and deregulation to ensure the national economy is resilient.

Small business lobby boss Luke Achterstraat told Capital Brief that both sides of politics should be looking to provide support for the small and medium enterprise sector amid the global upheaval.

“There’s so much uncertainty in the world at the moment so we need certainty," said Achertstraat, CEO of Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA), in an interview shortly after Trump unveiled sweeping tariffs including 10% on imports from Australia.

"Whether it’s things like the instant asset write-off, reducing the company tax rate, it’s providing that certainty,” he said.
