Global streaming audio giant Spotify has offered a rare glimpse into the performance of its slate of original Australian podcasts, including the breakout global hit Science Vs, despite its ongoing retreat from the medium.
Spotify began surfacing an in-app feature last month that denotes follower counts for select podcasts, including a swath of the company’s own original series, as well as a number of off-platform productions, such as the streamable version of the Kyle and Jackie O radio show and Schwartz Media’s daily news podcast, 7AM.
One of the largest Spotify podcasts of Australian origin on the platform by follower count is Gimlet Media’s Science Vs, a podcast hosted by Wendy Zukerman with some 1.3 million followers. The podcast was originally produced by the ABC, before it was scooped up in 2015 by Gimlet, which in turn was bought by Spotify in 2019.
Another of Spotify’s marquee originals is Toni and Ryan, a show launched in 2021 by Toni Lodge and Ryan Jon, who signed a deal with Spotify in 2022 and have since picked up about 406,000 followers.
