Stan quietly raises sport subscription price after Premier League deal
The price hike was rolled out without warning to existing Stan Sport subscribers on Tuesday, just a day after Nine announced its deal with Optus.
Nine Entertainment has quietly waved through a 19% price increase for subscriptions to Stan Sport, just one day after securing the coveted streaming rights to the English Premier League.
The price hike was rolled out without warning on Tuesday, a day after Nine announced it had acquired the Premier League rights from Optus, which will shutter its Optus Sport streaming service as a result. The price increase kicks in from 1 July.
The increase represents an aggressive effort to drive average revenue per user on Stan, which requires users to subscribe to the platform’s entertainment offering before adding Stan Sport as an extra. Sports fans will now pay a minimum of $32 a month, up from $27 previously.
On Monday, Nine announced that its streaming platform, Stan, had struck a deal with Optus for rights to the English Premier League and other assets for an upfront fee of $20 million, with the rights to change hands on 1 August.
