Streamflation has arrived in Australia as Apple TV+ hikes prices
Apple is raising prices of its streaming service, and Disney may soon follow.
It's been 18 months in the making but 'streamflation' has well and truly arrived in Australia. US tech giant Apple has quietly hiked the price of its Apple TV+ subscription service in Australia, following in the footsteps of a string of competitors in the crowded market, with expectations building those that have not yet lifted prices will soon follow.
The increase will see the price of Apple TV+ rise to $12.99 from $9.99 for Australian consumers, the second time the technology giant has jacked up the cost of its fledgling TV and movie subscription service over the last year.
“Since launching [in the US] four years ago, Apple TV+ has made history for streaming services by crossing major milestones in a short span of time, thanks to its extensive selection of award-winning and broadly acclaimed series, feature films, documentaries, and kids and family entertainment,” Apple said in a statement provided to Capital Brief.
Industry sources have told Capital Brief they expect Disney to soon lift the price of its Disney+ plan in Australia, after chief executive Bob Iger announced in August that the company would move to up the price of its streaming services in the US from October. Disney didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
