Shake-up at Sydney Morning Herald as Bevan Shields departs; Jordan Baker appointed editor
In a note to staff on Tuesday, Shields said he would step aside as editor of Nine’s Sydney metro masthead to focus on his health and wellbeing.
Bevan Shields, editor of Nine Entertainment’s Sydney Morning Herald, will step down as leader of the country’s oldest newspaper after four years in the role.
In an email to staff on Tuesday, Shields said he was stepping aside amid mounting speculation over his future. Luke McIlveen, executive editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, informed staff shortly after that Shields would be succeeded by Jordan Baker in the role in the new year.
“I am aware there has been some speculation about my future. I am writing to tell you that after four years as editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, I have decided to step aside,” Shields wrote in an email to staff, seen by Capital Brief.
“This job has been the honour of my life and I am extremely proud of everything we have achieved together. The time has come for me to focus on my health and wellbeing, and to think about the next chapter in my career.
