Ted O'Brien takes 'pro-technology' stance and queries Chalmers' 'middle course' on AI
In an exclusive interview, the opposition treasury spokesman suggests the Liberal Party will pursue a more laissez-faire approach to regulating AI than Labor.
Opposition treasury spokesman Ted O’Brien has cast doubt on Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ “middle course” approach to regulating artificial intelligence and warned that the Albanese government risks stifling the opportunities of the technology by focusing too heavily on its risks.
While O’Brien welcomed the inclusion of AI at last week’s Economic Reform Roundtable, describing the sessions on it as the “most beneficial” of the three days, he said he was sceptical about the government’s approach.
“Jim Chalmers often uses expressions like ‘the middle way’, which nobody really understands,” O’Brien told Capital Brief less than 24 hours after the end of the roundtable talks.
“I am a liberal at heart, which means I believe in small government and I am pro-technology. And so I am very optimistic about the benefits AI can bring to the Australian economy, its businesses and people,” O’Brien said.
