The $962b fund manager investing in litigation and music royalties
In volatile markets, Abrdn is looking well outside the box.
Irene Goh is the Asia Pacific head of multi-asset solutions at Abrdn, which manages almost £500 billion ($962 billion) in assets.
You run a large multi-asset income fund out of Australia. What’s the investment focus there?
We invest globally but recognise the advantages of certain pockets of assets like Australian equities where franking credits can boost distributions quite substantially. We complement those local assets with overseas investments denominated in Australian dollars.
As policy rates taper, we’re also allocating more to investment grade credit globally. There’s still a spread premium to Australian grade which we blend with global investment grade to achieve much lower volatility than the equity market while still getting similar levels of income.
