The OECD is 'essentially agnostic' on the impact of AI on the economy
The economic organisation of advanced economies is unsure whether artificial intelligence will boost productivity or not.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is not predicting a significant ramp-up in productivity on the back of advancements in artificial intelligence.
The intergovernmental organisation is, in fact, so on the fence about what new developments in this field could do for the economy and living standards that it has opted not to factor any improvements into its productivity outlook on the basis of the tech.
As Paris-based OECD senior economist Geoff Barnard explained to Capital Brief, the organisation has not yet firmed up a view on this critical issue when putting together forecasts.
“We have not built in any productivity boost from AI over the coming decades. We’re essentially agnostic on whether that’s going to be a big [driver of productivity] or not," Barnard told us.
