Thomson Geer’s chief executive partner sees the firm as a challenger brand — chasing high-profile cases and deals with a gameplan of poaching, lateral hires and mergers.

It has been just over a decade since mid-tier firms Thomsons Lawyers and Herbert Geer merged to form an 82-partner practice with an annual revenue of more than $120 million at the time.

Adrian Tembel took on the role of chief executive partner at the merged Thomson Geer and has overseen its expansion to a 150-partner firm through a strategy of acquisitions, most recently merging with Western Australian firm Tottle Partners.

"We're a classic Australian challenger brand," Tembel told Capital Brief for our The Firm series, adding that "poaching, lateral hiring and merging have been key parts" of the firm's game plan.

Tembel sees further opportunities for partner growth, including single and two-partner prospects, teams of four partners, or a boutique firm
