Global social media giant TikTok’s Australian boss is expected to imminently step down from his role at the short form video platform, as it continues to expand its workforce in the region despite ongoing regulatory scrutiny.

Lee Hunter, TikTok’s general manager in Australia and New Zealand, has told industry associates that he is poised to leave the Bytedance-owned video-sharing platform, according to several sources familiar with the matter. TikTok said it "does not comment on individual employees." Hunter did not answer calls or respond to text messages from Capital Brief.

Hunter has been leading TikTok’s operations in the region since May 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile, following stints at Google and YouTube. It could not be learned why he has stood down or where he is headed.

TikTok was launched by its Beijing-based parent company, Bytedance, in September 2016. It hit 8.5 million monthly active users in Australia last year.
