TikTok’s Singapore HQ steps up to handle Australian privacy probe
The engagement comes amid the departure of Lee Hunter, TikTok’s general manager in Australia and New Zealand, who last week told industry associates he was poised to step down.
Global social media giant TikTok is cooperating with a probe by Australia's privacy watchdog through its Singapore headquarters.
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) launched a probe into TikTok’s data handling practices late last year, after the Australian marketing firm Civic Data urged its clients to remove TikTok’s tracking code known as Pixel from their websites over privacy concerns.
The OAIC is now advancing its probe with TikTok leadership in Singapore, one of the platform’s two global headquarters, as the commissioner continues to work through its inquiry before weighing a formal investigation.
“The OAIC is continuing its preliminary inquiries and communicating with TikTok Singapore,” an OAIC spokesperson told Capital Brief. “The OAIC generally does not comment publicly on ongoing matters.”
