At this year's Macquarie Conference, CEOs tackled tariffs, shifting consumers and M&A hopes — with a side of burrito bravado from Guzman y Gomez.

The Macquarie Conference comes but once a year, and it’s one of the best events on the calendar — at least according to the fundies who flock to it.

With a broad swathe of the ASX showing up to field questions halfway between half-year and full-year results, plus closed-door meetings upstairs, here are the themes absorbing companies and investors right now.

Trump uncertainty

The question of Donald Trump and his trade war came up in nearly every session, but it was Bluescope CFO David Fallu — one of the few potential tariff winners — who put it best, cautioning against trying to forecast what the former president may do next.

“If someone's giving you that degree of certainty, I think they're lying or delusional,” Fallu said, marking the $10 billion steel producer’s first appearance at the conference.
