Trump’s Gaza threat reverberates through Canberra

Anthony Albanese was peppered with questions about Donald Trump’s announced plan to annex Gaza, proving that the new president can cause chaos with just a few words.

Anthony Albanese was eager to shift the pre-election conversation to Labor’s bread and butter, unveiling a $1.7 billion package to strengthen Medicare on Wednesday.

There was just one big problem. Hours before the announcement, and 16,000 kilometres away, US President Donald Trump had upended international orthodoxy with an announcement that was radical by even his standards.

“The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,” Trump told reporters in the White House, standing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “We’ll own it.”

Trump went on to claim Gaza would become “the Riviera of the Middle East” but warned its 1.8 million Palestinian inhabitants that they should find a permanent home elsewhere.
