Two questions Anthony Albanese skirted on stage 3

The Prime Minister had plenty to share about the government's hopes for "middle Australia". It's what he didn't say that was most revealing.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had plenty to say when he appeared at the National Press Club this afternoon regarding the government’s overhaul of the long-promised stage 3 tax cuts. But there were two things he wasn’t ready to admit.

The first, is that the changes amount to a broken promise.

The second, is that the government lied when it said, as recently as earlier this week, that its position on the tax cuts hadn’t changed.

Albanese started off with a carefully crafted speech that appealed directly to “middle Australia” and working class families. There were some striking moments where he appeared to be as empathetic as he had ever been to the plight of these voters.

“I recognise that what you [workers] do is essential to the strength of our economy and the health of our society. And I want to make sure that your efforts are rewarded,” he said, looking directly down the camera.
